Discover the Maeva archeological village which is a group of a large number of marae at the foot of Mount Mouatapu and on the shores of Lake Fauna Nui. Learn how to make Polynesian vanilla on a plantation visit and journey to the highest lookout point on the island to admire yet another magnificent vista!
Start your tour with a visit of a VANILLA PLANTATION. Learn how to make Polynesian vanilla and all the different steps to cook with vanilla. You will also have the possibility to buy this Polynesian "black gold" at a very good price. Your next stop will be at the ARCHEOLOGICAL VILLAGE of MAEVA. This place is recognized as the most important place for MARAE (traditional Polynesian temple) in French Polynesia. There are more then 10 of them regrouping in one place. Also discover the shallow expense of LAKE FAUNA NUI (also known as Lake Maeva) which is referred to a lake and or sometimes to a lagoon, but infact it's an inlet from the sea. There is a number of V-shaped fish traps, made from coral blocks. These traps have been here for centuries and some are still in use today. The tips of the Vs point towards the ocean so that fish, as they are pulled towards the sea by an ebb tide, are trapped in the Vs as the long stone arms emerge above the water level. Once they are in the circular basin at the point of the trap the fish are easily caught, usually by net or harpoon. Then enjoy the wonderful view at the highest lookout point of the island. You will want to take some pictures of the MAROE BAY, so don't forget your camera! Read more information about the Huahine Private Cultural Tour »
