A great day learning all about “Azulejos”, the famous Portuguese tiles, through a craftsman workshop and a visit to the National Tile Museum, while passing and admiring some of the most beautiful artworks in the city.Everyone saw or heard about the beautiful tiles (Azulejos) in Lisbon and Portugal. This kind of art has a very long History in Portugal, and is a heritage of the Arabic occupation of the Iberian Peninsula.

Start this tour heading South of Lisbon to the gorgeous region of Azeitão, where you’ll visit the well-known workshop of "Azulejos de Azeitão". There, you’ll be able to learn how tiles are made, and were made in the past, as old techniques are still used to replicate the artwork of our ancestors.

After learning the basics about the art, you’ll have the chance of painting your own tile, which will be baked later and sent to your hotel in Lisbon, or even back home (cost not included).

After a busy morning, choose where you want to have lunch with your guide, as Sesimbra, the fishing village, is just a short drive away. Otherwise, return to Lisbon and, along the way, admire some of the most impressive Tile Artworks around the city, as there are many masterpieces that can be seen.

In the afternoon, it will be time to head to the beautiful Madre de Deus Convent, dated back from the XV century, residence of the National Tile Museum. The inner church is an amazing heritage from the baroque, and is considered to be a “total piece of art”, where all elements were designed to form a perfect combination.

The Tile Museum keeps an impressive collection of tiles, ranging from the XV century to the contemporary artists, and including the most important international schools, as the Spanish and Dutch, among others. End the visit with some iconic pieces from the Portuguese Masters like Bordalo Pinheiro, Raúl Lino, Maria Keil and many others, which you can also see in many Lisbon streets, subway stations, etc. Ask your local guide to show you the kind you like the most.
