Head to Chankanaab (‘Little Sea’) Beach Adventure Park, located inside Cozumel’s National Marine Park. Inside the eco-nature reserve, an expert trainer greets you and provides you with a life jacket for your 45-minute encounter with two manatees.
An endangered species, manatees are gentle creatures that can grow as long as 13 feet (4 meters) and weigh up to a whopping 1,300 pounds (600 kg). While you stand on a platform in the water, receive an orientation on manatees’ characteristics and guidance on how to interact with these graceful creatures.
Wait for a manatee to glide up to you, and then accept wet kisses and hugs from the gentle giants. As they swim by, observe how they propel themselves with their mighty tails. Watch them gobble up leaves of lettuce from your hands. Enjoy some free time with the creatures in their home surrounded by tropical vegetation. Trainers are present to ensure the safety of both humans and manatees.
Photographers and videographers are on-site to capture your magical moments with the sea mammals. Photographs and CDs will be available for purchase by the time you leave Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park.
After the program, enjoy the park’s amenities. Swim in a pool, or snorkel (equipment available for rental) in the sea near colorful reef and limestone caves teeming with fish. Stroll through the botanical garden featuring plants from all over the world. Want to relax? Plop yourself on a hammock under a palapa. Then freshen up inside the changing rooms before returning to your hotel.
