Glide down Appian Way, one of the first paved roads in history, on this 4.5-hour Segway tour from Rome. With an expert tour leader leading the way, cruise through the historical streets surrounding the Colosseum before arriving at the ancient Appian Way. See sights such as the majestic Porta San Sebastiano and Capo di Bove, an archaeological site dating back to 2nd century AD, before feasting on a delicious, 2-course lunch. This group is limited to eight people, ensuring a small-group experience. Make your own way to the meeting point near the Colosseum in central Rome to meet your expert tour leader. Collect your Segway, strap on your helmet and begin your tour with a comprehensive orientation session on your two-wheeled, electric, self-balancing vehicle.

Once you feel confident on your Segway, plug into the provided, personal iPod, complete with an informative audio-visual overview of each stop, and follow your tour leader to the start of Appian Way.

On the way, pass the mighty Colosseum and roll up Caelian Hill, one of the original Seven Hills of Rome, where you’ll find the Baths of Caracalla (Terme di Caracalla), which date back to 212 AD.

On arrival at the pedestrianized Appian Way, stop to admire the impressive Porta San Sebastiano, which marks the start of the ancient road. Then, glide across the cobbled paving stones at a leisurely pace, soaking up the 2,000 years of history that permeate the air. Hear from your audio guide how it was here that Spartacus and his army were crucified, and learn about the site where early Christians buried their dead in massive, subterranean catacombs.

Pause for photos by the Church of Domine Quo Vadis, which, according to legend, is located on the site were St Peter had a vision of the risen Christ while fleeing persecution in Rome. Then, wonder at the verdant natural beauty that surrounds you as you continue along the historical path to Capo di Bove, an archaeological site that dates back to 2nd century AD.

After exploring Appian Way, follow your tour leader back to central Rome. Along the way, stop at a local restaurant to enjoy a hearty Italian lunch. Sink your teeth into two delicious courses, washed down with a glass of wine, beer, water or a soft drink. See Itinerary for a sample menu.

Your tour then concludes back at the original start point.

Please note:
this tour only operates on Sundays, as this is the only day Appian Way is closed to traffic. The order of activities as described above may be subject to change on the day of your tour.
