  • 2-Day Climbing Misti Volcano from Arequipa

Arequipa, Peru

Trip Type:   Multi-day Tours
Duration:  2 days
Misti is the most beautiful volcano of the three that surround Arequipa, and it is the emblem of the city. For many arequipeneans reaching the top means offering a small sacrifice to the volcano that protects the city. Although the climb is not difficult, previous acclimation is required as we will surpass the 5800 meters of altitude. At this point the air is so light that even walking takes a lot of effort. This is the reason why we suggest not making this experience if you have not spent at least a night or two in Arequipa. One of the most impressive parts climb to the top, is that from there we have a 360 degree viewpoint. From here you can see the surroundings of the city and the Natural Reserve of Aguada Blanca. Even at times, especially in seasonal changes, you can see the Pacific Ocean in the distance.

Very early in the morning we pick up hikers from their hotels. We drive in a SUV 4×4 to Aguada Blanca Reserve, 4150 meters, 3 hours of road. Here we begin the trek to base camp at 4800 meters and about 3 hours of walking, uphill all the time. Misti climb.

DAY 2:

We wake up before the sun rises, because today we reach the summit. The top is at 5825 meters of altitude above sea level, and it will take between 6 and 7 hours to reach it. However, to visit the crater we will have to make a small detour before reaching the summit, and follow a path that takes us into the volcano, where we will see some fumaroles. The view from anywhere is impressive.
After this we will head to the summit. 30min more of walking. This part is the most impressive as we walk with the beautiful views of the city at our left.

After finishing the visit to the cross at the top, and taking photos of course we begin the return. The descent is much simpler but can be hard on the knees so we go to the step that the group feels comfortable. It will take us about an hour to get to base camp and another hour to get to the transportation that will take us back to Arequipa where the tour ends.
