Icelandic skies are spectacular, especially between March and September when the legendary Northern Lights can often be seen. Known formally as ‘Aurora Borealis,’ the lights appear as a green glow that is created as a result of solar activity. Throughout your 2-day tour, your guide will constantly be on the lookout for the best places to spot them. With good weather and luck on your side, you should be perfectly placed to see this unforgettable natural light display!

Day 1: Reykjavik -- Thórsmörk Valley (L, D)
Hop on board your 4x4 jeep with your expert guide and head south to Iceland’s Blue Mountains. During ancient volcanic eruptions from the nearby Bláhnjúkur Volcano, lava flowed underground here in the Blue Mountains, leaving a labyrinth of tunnels and caves just waiting to be explored! Slip on a hard hat and head underground to explore these magical rock formations.

After discovering Iceland’s best subterranean caves, head north by jeep along the Thórsmörk mountain ridge -- one of Iceland’s hair-raising off-road tracks. Sit back and admire the scenery as your guide drives through rivers and crosses a glacial lagoon at Gígjökull. Stop at Seljalandsfoss, a 197-foot (60-meter) waterfall, to enjoy a packed lunch in the great outdoors before continuing to Stakkholtsgjá Canyon for a leisurely afternoon hike.

Dinner is a traditional Icelandic barbeque dinner in the Thórsmörk Valley, and is sure to be the most unique barbeque setting that you may ever experience! In this icy setting, flanked by the towering Mýrdalsjökull, Eyjafjallajökull and Tindfjallajökull glaciers, tickle your taste buds with Icelandic lamb specialties and grilled vegetables. Your evening finishes at the Básar Chalets where you’ll spend the night. Basic yet cosy, with sleeping bags on bunk beds, these mountain cabins are ideally located in the heart of the Icelandic countryside, with just the stars for company!

Overnight: ‘Sleeping-bag accommodation’ in the Básar Chalets, Thórsmörk Valley

Day 2: Thórsmörk Valley – Reykjavik (B, L)
Rise early for breakfast and then visit the picture-perfect Skógar Waterfall for a relaxing morning walk. Nearby you’ll find a gorgeous black-sand beach, pounded by the crashing waves of the North Atlantic Ocean. Your guide will drive you down the beach before following the Jökulsá Glacier River over to Sólheimajökull – the popular crevasse-studded glacier that boasts breathtaking ice formations and rugged ridges. Get kitted out with the provided crampons (spikes attached to the soles of your boots), and then set off for a glacier walk on the intense blue ice. Walking with your guide, learn about the geology of these stunning Icelandic glaciers.

On the journey back to Reykjavik, visit a seafood restaurant in the pretty seaside village of Eyrarbakki. Take the time to relax, chatting with other group members about your adventures in the Arctic. Arrive back in Reykjavik in the evening.
