Over the millennia, sand drifting from mainland Australia formed Fraser Island. Known as K’Gari—paradise—in the local Aboriginal language, the island boasts an incredibly diverse landscape with sandy beaches, giant sand dunes, lush rainforest and more than 100 lakes.

Your Fraser Island hiking experience includes camping equipment such as a tent, hiking backpack and cooking gear, plus maps, itineraries, and a driver-guide who takes you from Hervey Bay to the starting point on Fraser Island for the self-guided hike. Your driver-guide shares a safety briefing and information about what to expect as you make your way to Fraser Island. All you need to bring is your personal gear and food for your trip. The hiking trails call for a moderate level of fitness, so come prepared.

Day 1: Hervey Bay to Fraser Island – Lake Wabby
Your hiking adventure starts with morning pickup in Hervey Bay by your expert driver-guide. Travel by 4WD vehicle onto the Fraser Island ferry then zip along the white sands of Seventy-Five Mile beach in your 4WD upon arrival on the island.

Your experienced driver-guide provides detailed maps, camping and cooking equipment; information about landmarks along the trail; and a safety briefing before your departure. By the afternoon, set out on your self-guided hike from the eastern side of Fraser Island to reach Lake Wabby. Cross a giant sand dune named the Hammerstone Sandblow, which stretches down to the shores of the lake. When you arrive, take a refreshing swim in the jewel-toned lake, slide down the sand dune, set up your campsite and enjoy the tranquility of this scenic locale.

Your tour ends when your guide drops you off at your starting point in Hervey Bay.
