There are plenty of indoor and outdoor activities for children, as well as a cafe, gift shop, and Wi-Fi.The Adirondack region is a big place, and it needs a huge museum to share its stories, from Indigenous traditions that have thrived for hundreds of years to contemporary art that is inspired by the area’s majestic beauty.

Perched on a mountain ridge in the heart of the Adirondack Park - with Blue Mountain rising behind it and Blue Mountain Lake sparkling below - the Adirondack Museum is one of the region's premier, must-see attractions.

The vast campus features 24 contemporary and historic structures that paint a picture of life in these mountains, a 6-million-acre paradise that’s been enjoyed by Gilded Age barons, forest hermits, and everyone in between for more than 150 years.

Highlights include:

Boats and Boating in the Adirondacks explains the importance of watercraft in a land of lakes and rivers, displaying canoes, powerboats, and the indigenous Adirondack guideboat.

Woods and Waters: Outdoor Recreation in the Adirondacks features the stories of people enjoying the landscape, yesterday and today, including camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, skiing, snowshoeing, and the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games held in Lake Placid.

Work in the Woods: Logging the Adirondacks explores the history and traditions of one of the region's most important industries, showcasing the tools used and species harvested here, with a look at logging-camp life.

Bull Cottage: Adirondack Rustic Furniture displays tables, chairs, beds, and other furnishings skillfully crafted from acorns, bark, branches, roots, taxidermy, twigs, and other materials found in the woods.

The Little Log Cabin is outfitted with all the furniture, cooking utensils, and tools that young pioneers need to imagine living in the wilderness, along with a laundry yard, woodshed, outhouse, and one-room schoolhouse nearby.

Some special, temporary exhibitions include:

Weaving a Legacy: Mohawk Basketry Traditions is a collection of utility and fancy baskets that help explain the significance of baskets in the Mohawk community and beyond; materials, tools, and techniques used in their creation; and how traditions are passed among generations.

A Sense of Place: Ellen Phelan's Kenjockety features 24 oversized pigment prints, exploring a single place in the Adirondacks - the gardens and landscape of Kenjockety, the historic, 40-acre Lake Champlain estate in Westport that she owns with her husband, sculptor Joel Shapiro.

A Sneak Peek at 2017: The Adirondack Experience previews the new exhibition opening in 2017 with intriguing artifacts and hands-on interactive displays.
