Viking World is the home of the Viking Ship the Icelander that was built in 1996. The Icelander is an exact replica of the famous Gokstad ship, a remarkable archaeological find of an almost completely intact Viking ship, excavated in Norway in 1882. Viking World is also a home of the Viking millennium exhibition produced by the Smithsonian Institution called Vikings: The North Atlantic Saga. This exhibition sheds light onto the Norse settlement and explorations of unknown lands. The museum celebrates Iceland's central role in the discovery of North America a 1000 years ago by the Norse Vikings. They have now found a permanent home at Viking World, a spectacular modern building situated right by the Faxafloi bay in the town of Reykjanes, and can be easily spotted from the main road between the international airport and Reykjavík.

We also have a fine gift shop and a café that serves breakfast from 7am and food until 6pm.

The biggest attraction of Viking World is the magnificent Viking ship the Icelander built by the Icelandic ship builder Mr Gunnar Marel Eggertsson in 1996, who used an authentic ninth century viking ship as a model. He concentrated on using the same material and methods as the Vikings did. But Gunnar did not stop at that but took the Icelandair on a journey and sailed it to New York in 2000 as a part of the millennial celebration of Leifur Eiríksson’s journey to the New World.
