Take a break from the beach and enjoy a tour of La Romana’s biggest attraction, Altos de Chavón. Perched high above the Chavón River, this 16th-century European village replica — created by a Paramount Pictures set designer and the Dominican Republic's finest architects — will enchant you with its cobbled lanes, artisan shops, Mediterranean restaurants and Roman-style amphitheater. It’s a medieval European fantasy land in the heart of the Caribbean!
Start with a pickup from your La Romana or Bayahibe hotel in the morning, and head out on your half-day tour of Altos de Chavón, just a quick 15-minute drive up the coast from La Romana.

An architectural wonder perched above the Chavón River, Altos de Chavón is a replica of a 16th-century Mediterranean village, designed by Dominican architect Jose Antonio Caro and Italian master designer and cinematographer Roberto Coppa, a former set designer at Paramount Pictures.

Follow your guide on a walking tour through the enchanting cobblestone village, whose architecture was skillfully handcrafted by Dominican artisans. The village is home to Altos de Chavon School of Design, affiliated with Parson’s School of Design in New York.

Pop into boutiques and artisan shops selling local crafts and products such as jewels, clothing, fine cigars and embroidered linens. Browse art galleries featuring local and international artists, and pay a visit to the Regional Museum of Archaeology, an astonishing collection of pre-Columbian Indian artifacts discovered in the surrounding region.

Make the most of some free time to grab a bite to eat at a restaurant or cafe (own expense) before heading to Altos de Chavón’s main attraction: the Roman-style amphitheater. Inaugurated by Frank Sinatra in 1982, this 5,000-seat concert venue has hosted numerous performances by famous stars including Sting, Gloria Estefan, Shakira and Marc Anthony. With stunning views over the river and valley, it’s easily among the most impressive venues in the Caribbean!

After your tour of the amphitheater, it’s time to head back to La Romana or Bayahibe. Arrive back at your hotel in the afternoon.
