Asti's stories, history and art will unfold in front of your eyes as you discover on foot with your local guide the highlights of the city center: from the largest Gothic Cathedral of the region to the covered food market to the oldest horse race of Italy, the Palio. Local traditions and the glorious past combine together in the colors and flavors of this charming town. Asti is a gem of Northern Italy. Less known than other Italian cities, Asti reveals its century-long history in a city-centre rich in medieval towers and noble palaces once owned by powerful banker families recognized for their power all over Europe. Our journey back in time will start at the time of the Romans who founded the ancient Hasta, later an independent medieval town that fought against Alba, Milan, Genoa and many foreign conquerors, imposing its own rules and even its own currency. We will admire some paintings dating back to the XV century, one of the first examples of Renaissance influence here in Piedmont. The impressive Cathedral, largest work of Gothic architecture in the region, the stories of the old Jewish ghetto and the typical covered food market will be some of the highlights of the tour as well as San Secondo church and the City Hall. A photo stop in the piazza where the traditional Palio horse race takes place each September, will bring up to life one of the most colorful and passionate event of Italy. Our conversation will include some fun fact and curiosity about local gourmet products, wines and truffles, nowadays appreciated all over the world.
