This one day private tour to Transylvania is the perfect choice if you'd like to explore some of the most beautiful landmarks of the region: its medieval fortresses. The tour includes visits to Bran Castle, Rasnov Fortress and Rupea Fortress, all three medieval strongholds with centuries of history.In order to see all three medieval fortresses, we have to leave Bucharest as early as possible, around 7 am. This way we have enough time to enjoy a full day of historical discoveries. Our itinerary starts after we pick you up from your hotel. We'll drive towards Transylvania, stopping first at the mythical Bran Castle, continuing afterwards with visits at the fortresses from Rasnov and Rupea.
Bran Castle A castle of mythical dimensions because of its false connections to the myth of Dracula, Bran Castle actually became a castle after Queen Maria received the old medieval fortress as a gift after the First World War. Famous for her passion for architecture and decorations, Queen Maria turned the 14th century fortress into a spectacular royal castle, conserving nonetheless its medieval look. From a historical point of view, the fortress from Bran was one of the most important from the border of Transylvania and Southern Romania, separate entities until the Great Union of 1918.
Rasnov Fortress The large fortress from Rasnov is one of the best examples of the medieval military architecture from the Country of Barsei. First mentioned in 1335 as surviving the Tatar invasion that destroyed the area of Brasov, the fortress was originally built on the ruins of an ancient site by the Teutonic Knights between 1211 and 1225. The fortress was later enlarged and fortified by the local Saxon community who owned it until the mid-18th century.
Rupea Fortress
Located half way between Brasov and Sighisoara, the fortress of Rupea extends on almost 11 hectares, and is one of the most impressive in Transylvania. First mentioned in 1324, the fortress of Rupea was inhabited by hundreds of people from the local Saxon community, life in the fortress having all the prerequisites of the time: a chapel, a parish, a local market, a fountain, a place for carriages, military towers and even a bacon tower where the meat reserves were stored.
