Meet your guide near Deák Square in central Budapest and hop aboard your hybrid, 24-speed bicycle — a cross between a road bike and mountain bike. After a briefing, opt to put on a provided cycle helmet and set off behind your expert guide.

Your tour showcases Budapest’s key sights, and includes regular stops to take photos and hear about the landmarks from your expert guide. Plus, your route involves mostly riding on the flat, and sticks to cycle lanes, parks and car-free areas, so your explorations are very relaxed.

Cycle along Budapest’s loveliest avenue, UNESCO-listed Andrassy Avenue, and admire the State Opera House as your guide recounts the history of this handsome building.

Next, head for Heroes’ Square, perhaps Budapest’s best-known public space. Pose for photos at the Millennium Monument as you learn how it commemorates the Magyar chieftains who led their people to Hungary in the 9th century, and then pedal through leafy City Park to see Vajdahunyad Castle.

After taking in the ornate castle architecture, get a glimpse of the traditional thermal pools at the Széchenyi Baths, and then return to the city center, pausing outside St Stephen’s Basilica and the House of Terror museum, dedicated to Budapest’s suffering under the Nazis and Communist rule, on route.

Swing by the Hungarian Parliament Building and cross the Chain Bridge, absorbing the views of the Danube River to either side of you.

Then, meander around the hilly, cobbled lanes of the beautiful UNESCO-listed Buda Castle District. Admire the Baroque buildings and Matthias Church and listen avidly as your guide explains how the area was once one of medieval Europe’s main power bases.

Lastly, stop at an open-air restaurant set in a pretty, green park. Here, refuel with a hearty bowl of Hungarian goulash as you chat over your explorations.

Your tour then ends back at the start point.
