Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village (BNHV) is the former Amherst Museum located at 3755 Tonawanda Creek Road in Amherst, New York. In 2016, the Amherst Town Board designated BNHV as the Amherst Historical Society. This designation makes BNHV the official repository for the Town of Amherst’s historical archives, photographs, and artifacts. This designation also means that BNHV is the resource for all Amherst-focused research and historical education. With that comes a huge responsibility for the organization to act as a center for community-driven education and tourism. The museum exists to better the quality of living for the people of Amherst and to serve as an educational center for our community. Please consider volunteering and becoming a part of Amherst’s Historical Society.  Contact us today!  You can also help your local historical society by giving to the museum’s annual campaign and help preserve and interpret the story of Amherst for the people of today and the community of tomorrow.

Chartered by the New York State Board of Regents, BNHV is a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit organization. Formed in the 1970s, the organization maintains a 35-acre museum campus which includes 11 historic buildings, a 25,000 square foot exhibit space, an educational facility, research and archival library, and a state of the art storage facility which houses 40,000 Amherst-focused artifacts, archives, and photographs. The mission of BNHV is to preserve and interpret the story of Buffalo Niagara for the people of today and the community of tomorrow.

Each year, the museum hosts 20,000 visitors including 6,000 school children, and serves as a home for a number of local artisan groups including the Weavers Guild of Buffalo, the Amherst Victorian Dance Society, the BNHV Lace Guild, the Amherst Quilt Guild, and the NYS Designer Blacksmiths. BNHV is proud to have almost 200 volunteers who serve as docents, costumed interpreters, and special events personnel. The museum is open 9:30am-4:30pm on Wednesdays and Fridays, 9:30am to 8:00pm on Thursdays, and 12:00pm to 4:30pm on Saturdays from Labor Day to Memorial Day; and 9:30am to 4:30pm Wednesday through Friday, and 12:00pm to 4:30pm Saturday through Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
