Pass by Setúbal, one of the oldest fishing villages and end your tour visiting Palmela’s Castle. After a morning pick up from your centrally-located Lisbon hotel, you will be off. View Lisbon from the other side as you pass over the 25th April Bridge, which crosses over the Tagus River to connect Lisbon with the municipality of Almada on the other side.
Your first stop will be at the Christ the King statue. Based on the famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil,it offers wonderful views of Lisbon. Plans for the monument were approved in 1940 as a plea to God to release Portugal from entering WWII, but it was not completed until 1969.
Next, head to the parish of Azeitão, where you will have the opportunity to taste the wine and cheese from this area. Azeitão cheese is an unpasteurized sheep's milk cheese with a semi-soft consistency similar to brie. You will also visit a wine cellar, where you will learn about the process of making wine, then try some samples.
Stop to observe the manufacture of Portuguese tile on your way to beautiful Arrábida Natural Park. Here you will have free time to explore the beaches and have lunch (own expense). The park is only one of the 30 areas which are officially under protection in the country. Enjoy the amazing views over the Atlantic and the park.
On your return to Lisbon, you will pass through the fishing village of Setúbal and stop at Palmela Castle. Human occupation in this area dates back to the Neolithic period, with the founding of a settlement and subsequent fortification beginning as early as 301 BC. Its height offers great views back over the river and Lisbon.
Cross over the Vasco da Gama Bridge on your return back into Lisbon and your return to your hotel around 5:00pm.
