It has a history that goes back nearly 2000 years; flourishing in Saxon times and was a strategic stronghold for King Alfred the Great. The picturesque market town on the banks of the River Frome is the perfect place to man your own boat for a gentle glide through the calm river Frome. Stroll the streets, take in the local atmosphere and why not visit Dorset's oldest church? St Martin's Church in Wareham is a 1, 000 years old and famous for housing a priceless effigy of Lawrence of Arabia. Colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence, or Lawrence of Arabia, made Dorset his home in his final years. Lawrence was killed in a motorcycle accident in May 1935.

Lawrence is buried in Moreton, and a famous stone effigy of Lawrence can be seen at St Martin's Church in Wareham. You will also visit the small memorial by the road side at Clouds Hill marks the area of the accident.
