See the real Dominican Republic on a full-day countryside voyage, traveling by eye-catching 'safari truck'! Aboard a 4x4 truck, experience an authentic Dominican way of life: stop at a sugarcane field and a school, ride a horse, and visit a local family’s home to eat and drink regional specialties. Admire the unusual Basilica of Higuey, learn how to roll the perfect cigar, watch how rum is made, and take in mountaintop views while enjoying a delicious Dominican buffet lunch. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included. Your full-day tour starts with pickup from your La Romana or Bayahibe hotel. Riding aboard your 4x4 truck — the perfect mode of transport for your Dominican adventure — travel through the lush green countryside while learning about the history, culture, flora and fauna of the Dominican Republic from your expert guide.

Capture glimpses of everyday life, experience true Dominican hospitality and see how local produce is grown, beginning with a stop at a sugarcane field. While chewing on a piece of freshly cut stalk, learn how locals in the past made their livelihoods in harvesting this plant and how this process has changed today.

Briefly visit a sponsored school and listen to your guide discuss the educational system before heading over to a horseback-riding ranch. Don a helmet, receive a safety briefing and trot along on your horse for about 20 minutes.

Following the horseback ride, relax by the soothing Anamuya River with a Cuba Libre cocktail in hand, a mixture of cola, lime and white rum. Your appetite opened, visit a typical countryside home in a mountainside village, meet its inhabitants and sample fresh coffee, chocolate and fruit from the area.

Continue your culinary delights with a marvelous buffet lunch at a ranch on top of Anamuya Mountain, featuring typical Dominican fare.

Travel to a trapiche, or sugarcane mill, and see how Dominican rum is made. At a local museum, learn about another top local commodity: cigars. Did you know Christopher Columbus encountered tobacco for the first time in the Dominican Republic? He then introduced this to Europe. Dominicans know their tobacco, and here, you'll learn the craft of rolling cigars from a master cigar-maker.

Continue to the Basilica of Higuey, a unique architectural structure and important pilgrimage site dedicated to Our Lady of Altagracia, patroness of the nation. Built in 1972, the concrete basilica is noted for its imagery of oranges, which are symbolic of the orange grove believed to be the site of a vision of the Virgin Mary.

After a full day of sightseeing and scrumptious sampling of foods, relax on the drive back to your La Romana or Bayahibe hotel.

Sample buffet lunch menu (subject to change):

• White rice and dark rice with beans
• Chicken creole and beef creole
• Spaghetti pomodoro
• Salad bar and fresh fruit
