Kuah, formerly a humble fishing village, is now know today as Pekan Kuah, as booming a commercial center can be with shopping complexes, restaurants, fast food outlets, hotels and handicraft shops. Kuah is a nice and small town with a relaxed atmosphere. View this compact town in the evening with its collection of shops and local hawker stalls. The name ‘Pekan Kuah’ comes from the Malay word for gravy, and legend has it that the town arose from a cup of gravy spilled on the land by two giants, Mat Raya and Mat Cincang (now the names of the two highest mountains in Langkawi), while they were fighting.

Located on the southeastern tip of Langkawi Island, Kuah is the main town and the transit point for ferries from the mainland and Penang. Kuah is also the most important town on Langkawi Island. Though it is not an actual city, local people from Langkawi refer to it as a city. Among Langkawi’s most well-known attractions here is undoubtedly the Dataran Lang or Eagle Square. On this square an enormous hand-made eagle rises in the sky. This eagle symbolizes the island of Langkawi. The name of the island originates from a combination of the words Helang (which means eagle in Malay) and Kawi (red/brown, the color of the statue). On one of the many benches around statue you can enjoy one of the best sunsets on the island.

With the status of Langkawi as a duty free zone, you can shop for an extensive array of items such as liquor, tobacco, chocolates and some imported household items all of which are much cheaper compared to many other places. Kuah is recommended as it is the only place to do some real shopping on the island. This is a chance to haggle for a great shopping deal for those who enjoy a shopping spree and grab some souvenirs for friends back home. Return to your hotel afterwards.
