Leaving Rome

Heading out along the Appia Nuova a fairly busy road even on the weekends brings us to the foothills of the Alban Hills. The climb up to the top of the crater overlooking the Alban lake from the town of Castel Gandolfo is steady and regular, no steep sections.

Castel Gandolfo
After we reach the top we head to the cafe situated in the main piazza overlooking the town square and lake. Taking a minute to catch our breath and enjoy a cappuccino surrounded by the Pontifical Palace and Church.

Alban Lake
Cycling over to the right of the lake brings us around the lake to a point with an excellent view back over towards the town we just left with the lake below us. Perfect moment to enjoy the feeling of being daring enough to venture that far away from Rome! ON our way downhill we still catch glimpses of the lake below.

Marino
One of the other cities famous for its wine and fizzy local water being situated as it is on the volcano.

Frascati
The last of the medieval towns we visit is special due to the villas built here by popes, cardinals and roman nobility as well as the white wine produced from the grapes grown of the slopes surrounding the town. We make a stop at a historical osteria, famous for its long running wine making heritage where we sample some of the best white wine. Accompanied by fruit and bread/snacks.
