With pick up points in Arras at 9.30am, you will receive an in depth explanation of the Battles, a map showing the area and a Battlefield guide for the area as well as stories of individual soldiers, bringing the Battlefield to life.

Start with the killing fields of Fromelles, driving past WW1 Machine gun bunkers and command post, along Aubers Ridge where the British fought in 1915 to Fromelles. You will see Pheasant Wood and the original site of the mass grave of 250 soldiers before we see the new Cemetery, where over half have been identified. Next, you will visit the new Fromelles Museum (subject to opening hours) before travelling to the battlefield itself.

You will visit the moving 'Cobbers Memorial' and remaining German bunkers and the Mass Grave and Memorial- 'VC Corner' before we drive through the Flanders fields villages and towns where every soldier spent time between offensives. Winding your way across the border into Belgium, stop at Ploegsteert Wood where you will have lunch with Claude and Nelly, maybe a bowl of Claude's warming homemade soup or a salad, or a toasted ham and cheese sandwich.

Just up the road you will see the memorials to the Christmas Truce of 1914, Messines Ridge and the Spanbroekenmolen mine or 'Pool of Peace', the largest of the 19 mines blown on the 7th June 1917. Then make our way to the Hill 60, an area of Battlefield fought over since 1914 and where the Australians blew the two mines at the furthest edge of the Messine Ridge. Follow the path of the advance during the 3rd Battle of Ypres and see Ploygon Wood and 'Scotts Post' Bunker, the New Zealand and Australian Memorials and New Butts Cemetery before making our way to Zonnebeke and the fascinating Passchendaele Museum with its reconstructed trenches and underground dugouts.

Your last visit of the day is Tyne Cot, the scene of the Battle of Passchendaele and the largest WW1 Commonwealth Cemetery in the World. Head into the City of Ypres where you will have time to soak up the atmosphere and get something to eat, buy some fine chocolate or sample the local beer, before attending the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate. Leave Ypres at 8.30pm to return to Lille for your return train to Paris or Arras, there is of course the opportunity to stay overnight in Ypres and continue on from there the next day.
