Plitvice National Park was founded in 1949 and became famous during the 1960s and 1970s through several Western film productions of Karl May novels. Many scenes have been shot at the lakes or waterfalls. The particular geographic position of the Plitvice Lakes and the specific climate features contributed to the emergence of many natural phenomena and a rich biodiversity within this area.
Despite the vicinity to the Mediterranean, a moderate mountainous climate prevails due to the Velebit mountain range, which acts as a climatic separator between the coastal and continental region. For centuries, legends have been created about these mythical lakes, rivers and waterfalls. According to one particular legend, inhabitants of this region were craving for water and thus called upon the magic queen to help them, which she did. This is the reason why Plitvice lakes have emerged.
The availability of water has a great impact on the biodiversity of this area. The afforested mountain slopes serve as water reservoirs and as a refuge for many animal species. The wider area of the national park is one of the last areas in Europe, in which a great number of wolves and brown bears can be found. As a whole, there exist about 50 species of mammals. Also, 321 different species of butterflies have been discovered. Although biodiversity loss continues globally, many countries including Croatia are significantly slowing the rate of loss by expanding national park system with tighter management and secure funding.
