On our way through the canyon we will see amazing rock formations, caves and beautiful waterfalls.
The Jökulsá river cuts through Kárahnjúkar forming a huge canyon, Hafrahvammagljúfur, as well as Dimmugljúfur which is one of the darkest and most imposing canyons in Iceland. The main canyon is about 5 km long and the entire canyon from Desjará to Tröllagil spans 10 km.
After the Kárahnúkar dam was completed in 2008 a new possibility for hiking opened.
On our way through the canyon we will see amazing rock formations, caves and beautiful waterfalls. After the hike we go to Laugavalladalur valley and relax under the natural hot waterfall.
During a one month period the excess water in Hálslón reservoir overflows the Karahnúkar dam making the canyon inaccessible.
