Spend a day outside of Puerto Iguazú and discover the rich history of the Iguassu Falls region. Learn about the famous Jesuit mission of 1632, which aimed to spread Christianity throughout Argentina during the Spanish colonial period. Then, explore the Wanda Mines and their sparkling crystals before heading back to your Puerto Iguazú hotel. On a break between your visits to Iguassu Falls, travel outside of the city of Puerto Iguazú and learn about the province of Misiones, Argentina. Journey approximately 155 miles (250km) through the countryside en route to the partially reconstructed San Ignacio Mission. Originally built in 1632, this landmark represents the history and existence of the Christian missions of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Spend some free time walking around the site and imagining just what it was like more than 350 years ago. Your bilingual guide will walk with you and answer any questions you may have.

Then, travel to the Wanda Mines site and view the gemstones that form in the area. Hundreds of years ago, the lava in this region rose through fissures in the earth creating enough pressure for the materials to bubble. The quick cooling of the lava created crystals, all of them in pyramidal hexagonal shapes made of amethyst quartz and agates that are today used for jewelry. Learn about the formation process of many minerals including amethysts, agates, topazes and quartz crystals.
