Your tour begins at Kailua Pier, right in the center of Kailua-Kona, a gem of a village.  Boarding Marian a 36’ custom designed glassbottom boat is easy.  Step up a couple of steps to the boarding ramp and down a couple of steps to the main hull and viewing area.  Everyone sits around four large viewing boxes with comfortable cushioned seats where no one can block your view.  The expert naturalist will start your tour telling you all about the safety features on board, and then off you cruise.

The reefs in Hawaii are “fringing reefs” which means they are right next to the coastline. Marian was specially designed to get over the very shallow waters and the expert captains are able to get right up to the shoreline.  This makes for a breathtaking experience. Your naturalist tells you all about the interactions that are taking place on the reef.  Ever wonder where the beautiful white sands come from, could it be a fish?  Learn about the sweet, and sometimes strange mating practices of fish.  Are the corals actually cities at war?  The crew have been diving these waters for 20-30 years and there is no end to the stories they tell.  You will cruise over a pinnacle that will be inches from the glass, a great photo opportunity.  The boat will go off of the shoreline so you can see how quickly the bottom plunges deeper and deeper. You might get a chance to view frolicking spinner dolphins or seasonal humpback whales.  Feel free to move about the boat, look out from the bow or sit in your seat and look through the elliptical windows.  As you crusie along, you’ll enjoy breathtaking vistas of the rugged shoreline and slopes of Hualalai. You will view many beautiful historical sights: Hulihee Palace, Mokuaikaua Church, the oldest Christian church in Hawaii, Kamakahonu where King Kamehameha I made his home in his final years and ʻAhuʻena Heiau that was his personal shrine. You might want to walk around the village later to explore these sights.  Your tour ends as you cruise back to Kailua Pier.

This tour is a must for anyone that wants to see and learn about Hawaii’s reefs, and you don’t even get wet!  There are no age or size restrictions, so it is great for families. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and clothing, bring a camera, sunscreen and hat is always a good idea.
