Meet at Gwangwhamun station at City Hall to board an official festival shuttle bus to the Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival. During the 3-hour ride to Hwacheon in Gangwon-do province, listen to your onboard guide share information about the upcoming events in preparation for a full day of winter amusement.

Upon arrival at the festival site, you’re admitted to the frozen ice field — a unique geographical feature of the Hwacheon Stream each season, due to the combination of cold valley wind and clear, fresh water. Here you’ll find the festival highlight: hordes of visitors ice fishing for mountain trout called sancheoneo.

If you’d like to join in the fun, you can rent a fishing rod. Then carve a hole into the 15-inch-thick (40-cm) ice and wait for your catch. (Hint: the stream is supplied with tons of fresh, moderate-sized fish each day to make it easier to compete among the other 11,000 ice holes.)

The festival has about 60 different activities you can do, including a bobsleigh ride, ice hockey or ice soccer, snow sledding, snowmobiling, snow sculpture and much more.

With approximately 5 hours to spend on-site, you have plenty of time to partake in the festivities, eat an included lunch and enjoy photo time.

After your fill of fun and heart-warming memories of winter, hop back on the shuttle to Seoul, with drop-off at Gwangwhamun station at City Hall.
