The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum is the only museum where visitors can explore a legendary aircraft carrier, the first space shuttle, the world's fastest jets and a guided missile submarine. We thrill visitors of all ages and connect them to history through hands-on exploration, stories of heroism and firsthand accounts of the people who were there. As New York City's only educational institution housed on an aircraft carrier, we're advancing innovation by developing the next generation of leaders in science, technology engineering and math.Launched in 1943, the former aircraft carrier USS Intrepid fought in World War II, surviving five kamikaze attacks and one torpedo strike. The ship later served in the Cold War and the Vietnam War. Intrepid also served as a NASA recovery vessel in the 1960s. It was decommissioned in 1974, and today is berthed on the Hudson River as the centerpiece of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
Intrepid Aircraft Carrier
- The Hangar Deck is a great place to start your visit and our main indoor exhibit space, the hangar deck takes you through both the hardware and humanity of Intrepid.
- On our Flight Deck, you will be able to get an up-close look at more than two dozen authentically restored aircraft, look inside the Restoration Tent, and take a walk through history on Intrepid's island and bridges.
- The Gallery Deck, located between the flight deck and hangar deck, features the combat information center (CIC), squadron ready room and marine berthing.
- Check out the mess deck is where Intrepid's enlisted crew members ate their meals. The mess, or dining area, has been restored to its original appearance. The vibrant décor—complete with custom paint colors, colorful textiles and Western-themed props—is unique to Intrepid.
The Space Shuttle Pavilion
- The Space Shuttle Pavilion showcases the space shuttle Enterprise, the prototype NASA orbiter that paved the way for the space shuttle program. Seventeen dynamic exhibit zones feature original artifacts, photographs, audio, and films that immerse visitors in the science and history of Enterprise and the space shuttle era.
Submarine Growler
- The former USS Growler first opened at the Intrepid Museum in 1989 and is the only American guided missile submarine open to the public. Growler offers museum visitors a firsthand look at life aboard a submarine and a close-up inspection of the once "top-secret" missile command center. Access is available to the various compartments as they were used during operations.
British Airways Concorde
- Get an upclose look at the British Airways Concorde which completed the fastest Atlantic crossing by any Concorde on February 7, 1996. The trip took only 2 hours, 52 minutes, and 59 seconds.
