During your cruise stop in Izmir, visit the biblical and religious sites of ancient Ephesus on this full-day private shore excursion. When your ship docks in Izmir, meet your private guide at the cruise port and board your air-conditioned minivan. Then, enjoy the views on your way to Ephesus.

After roughly one hour, arrive at this age-old Greco-Roman city. Enter with your guide via the Magnesia Gate and explore the ruined streets, shops, building and other monuments of this once powerful trading city.

See the Roman baths, Odeon, Fountain of Trajan and the Temple of Hadrian, and admire the magnificent Library of Celsus. Linger, too, at the Great Theatre, a 25,000-seater arena where St Paul — who lived in Ephesus for a time in the 1st century AD — preached sermons condemning pagan worship.

Leave Ephesus and visit the nearby House of the Virgin Mary, where Mary is said to have spent her last years. Go inside the tiny house-turned-chapel and hear why Roman Catholics traditionally associate it with Mary, who many believe visited Ephesus with St John.

Continue to the Basilica of St John to see the remains of this 6th century church. View the walls and remaining frescoes of this once-majestic church that was built over the believed burial site of the apostle.

Finally, head for the Temple of Artemis, where a single, restored column marks what was once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Inspect the ruins and learn how the temple was rebuilt three times before its destruction in 401 AD.

Stop for lunch (own expense) at an opportune time during your trip, and after seeing the Temple of Artemis, return to Izmir cruise port where your tour ends.

Please note: the order of activities as described above may be subject to change on the day of your tour.
