Since then, these streets have raised many of the stars of the flamenco genre, such as Manuel Molina, Antonio Chacón, La Paquera, Lola Flores, José Mercé, 'Terremoto' or Antonio Ríos Fernández 'El Pipa.' In both Santiago and San Miguel, a healthy rivalry has remained since ancient times, and Flamenco can be breathed at all hours in the numerous bars and peñas flamencas installed there.

The Flamenco style of today took shape in the nineteenth century, amongst the traditional music and dance of Andalusia, a city with origins ancient and diverse. However, Flamenco is not the folklore of Andalusia (including seguidillas, sevillanas, fandangos, verdiales, ballads, the chacarrá, or el vito) but is a fundamentally scenic display of art. Jerez is considered the birthplace of Flamenco, and not without reason, since it alone holds the honor of being the birthplace of so many aforementioned stars.

Typical dishes from the cuisine of Jerez de la Frontera are ajo campero, puchero, cola de toro, chicharrones, riñones al jerez, choco con papas, berza jerezana, and alcauciles al jerez. Jerez is the most excellent place to familiarize yourself with Sherry wines like Fino, Amontillado, Oloroso, and ‘Mosto’ in the proper season. Its cuisine has received and integrated many influences. Rather than full dishes, the gastronomy is further characterized by the culture of tapas.

Jerez also retains an incredible architectural heritage. In addition to the Cathedral and the Alcazár, you can visit the churches of the Reconquista in the center of the medieval town. The squares of Arenal and Plateros will give you the chance to take a relaxing break before exploring the vibrant medieval quarters to San Miguel and Santiago where the terraces of the bars alternate with the shops.
