Your captain will let you know when it’s time to head back.Tuck your passport into your pocket or purse and board your boat from Red Hook in St Thomas or Cruz Bay in St John. (If you’re staying in St Thomas, upgrade and add convenient round-trip hotel transport.)

Take a speedy 30-minutes ride from the US Virgin Islands toward Jost Van Dyke, enjoying views of the sparkling blue Caribbean along the way. Go through customs at Great Harbour ($40 international processing fee is an additional expense). While you’re waiting, pop open the cooler your captain has brought on board, and help yourself to the bottles of cold beer and water inside.

Your passport stamped, arrive minutes later in the reef-protected waters at White Bay. Just off Jost Van Dyke, it is the smallest of the British Virgin Islands. White Bay’s stretch of white sand is dotted with bars, eateries and shops, making it one of the most popular beaches in the Caribbean.

What adds to the fun? There are no docks here, so you have to swim or wade in to the shore. If you're not a swimmer, fear not: Your boat is specially designed to operate in shallow waters, allowing your captain to anchor fairly close to the beach. Feel free to leave your personal items on the boat because your captain will stay on board and keep watch.

Walk through chest-high waters and head to the Soggy Dollar, a bar right in the bay. The potent rum-based Painkiller started here in the 1970s and the beach bar has since steeped in popularity. If the crowd here is not for you, climb to the shore and mosey over to the laid-back One Love Bar & Grill, where you can listen to reggae music as you lounge on a beach chair.

At One Love Bar & Grill, make sure to try some local 24/7 Rum. Savor the hints of butterscotch, honey, caramel and vanilla; it's a winning combo in this liqueur that is available at only a few select bars.

Come and go from your boat as you please as you purchase libations from the various White Bay establishments. Or, just dig your toes in the sand and soak up the sun. When it’s time to leave, hop back aboard and return to your departure point.
