Krampus originates from centuries of Pagan festivals and is by far the most unique Christmas celebration ever experienced. This overnight trip to Berchtesgaden is the only way to truly experience this ancient tradition and festival. Krampus is the combination of many Pagan figures and traditions. Today in Bavaria he is the scary figure wearing leather or wooden masks while sporting furs and cowbells. In Christian times, the Krampus traditionally punished or rewarded children based on the “bad or good” model that Santa uses. Nowadays the Krampus act as companions to St. Nicholas when he makes his visit on 5 & 6 December. Particular to Berchtesgaden are the Buttenmandl’ who dress up in specially grown hay and run from house to house terrorizing naughty children and passers-by alike. They, along with the Krampus’ roam the streets literally beating bystanders with switches; presumably to drive out the evil. This is a terrifying and insane cultural event, not to be missed but not for the faint of heart! Be aware that you too may be hit with a switch!
Our overnight trip includes transportation from the city of Salzburg Austria to Berchtesgaden where you will have three star accommodation at the Hotel Alpina Ros located in the city centre. After checking in there will be a tour of the famous Grassl Enzian factory along with a tour of the Krampus and Christmas Market festival. Following the tours there will be free time in the city to enjoy the festivities and then a group reservation for dinner in the centrally located Goldenar Bär, where you will be entertained by some of the "Krampus" who will be at the bar drinking and preparing for the late night beatings. After dinner you are on your own and  we will see you at breakfast at the hotel the next morning before your take the shuttle back to Salzburg that morning.
