Visit the island of La Gomera on a day trip from southern Tenerife, and experience its sights, culture and food with a local guide! A haven of peace with dramatic terrain, the island is often considered as the gem of the Canarian archipelago. Discover landmarks such as Columbus House in the capital of San Sebastian, ogle the views from Mirador de Las Carboneras, enjoy a 2-course lunch in a quaint village, and then watch a ‘silbo gomero’ (local whistling language) demonstration. Start your day with a pickup from your southern Tenerife hotel, and then travel to the island’s west coast to board your ferry to La Gomera, the island known as the jewel of the Canary Islands. Relax out on deck during the 45- to 60-minute crossing before hopping onto dry land at San Sebastian, La Gomera’s capital.

On a walking tour, see a collection of the city’s historical sights. Admire the façade of the Church of the Assumption (Iglesia del Asunción), stop for photos by the Hermitage of San Sebastian and see Columbus House — built on the spot where Sir Christopher Columbus is thought to have stayed on the island.

Continue by minibus to one of the island’s best-loved vantage points at Mirador de Las Carboneras, and gaze out at sights of the Hermigua valley and town, framed by a seamless blue void of sea and sky. After soaking up the panoramic sights, travel onward through Garajonay National Park, and stop along the way for a stroll to stretch your legs.

Lunch beckons in the town of El Cedro, so stop at a traditional Gomeran restaurant for your 2-course meal. The menu often changes, but typically your lunch starts with a dish of fresh bread with Canarian herb sauces — known as mojos — followed by a main course of salty local potatoes with either chicken or beef goulash, both prepared with local herbs and spices. Savor the food and enjoy up to half a bottle of local wine, too.

Head to the nearby village of Las Rosas next and explore its pretty streets with your guide. Stop to watch a demonstration of the famous Gomeran whistling language, known locally as silbo gomero, and learn how the ‘language’ was used to communicate across the island’s deep valleys and ravines.

From Las Rosas, make your way back to the port at San Sebastian, cross the sea by ferry, and finally finish with a drop-off at your southern Tenerife hotel.

Please note: Occasionally, lunch may be eaten in Las Rosas and the stop in El Cedro will consist of free time to explore.
