Dress up warmly and make your own way to the safari starting point in central Luosto in the early evening. When you arrive, meet your friendly guide and get a safety briefing and instructions on riding your 2-seater snowmobile. Then, don your supplied helmet and thermal outerwear, and once you feel comfortable, set off in a convoy with your guide in search of the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis.
Only visible in far northern latitudes, the Northern Lights are caused by magnetic storms that create shimmering ribbons of green, yellow, red and violet in the sky. Sightings can never be guaranteed, as they’re dependent on weather, location and chance, but your experienced guide will look for the most promising viewpoints during your safari.
Take turns drive and ride pillion on your snowmobile, and skim along snowy trails around icy fells, pine woods and countryside. Race up and down hills and speed along a frozen river. Along the way, keep watch for the Northern Lights. With cloudless weather, a little luck and the benefit of Luosto’s extremely low artificial light pollution, there’s a good chance of sightings!
During your ride, stop at a campfire for a warming hot drink . Listen to intriguing facts about the Northern Lights and the ancient legends that surround this dazzling natural phenomenon.
Afterward, drive back to your original starting point where you dismount from your snowmobile and your safari comes to an end.
