Chase one of nature’s most magical spectacles on this 4-hour Northern Lights snowmobile safari from Saariselkä. Board your snowmobile in the evening and ride through dark fells and forests to an igloo camp, where, free from light pollution, the chances of sightings are higher. Scan the skies with pointers from your guide, watch a presentation on the lights inside an igloo, and defrost with sausages and hot berry juice around an open fire in a ‘kota’ — a traditional Lapland tepee. Finish your experience with another snowmobile ride back to Saariselkä.
Dress warmly and start your expedition with an evening pickup from your centrally located hotel in Saariselkä. Board a comfortable minivan or coach and travel to the safari office where your 2-person snowmobile is waiting.

Upon arrival, listen to a safety briefing and instructions on how to drive your easy-to-control vehicle. Once you feel confident, put on your supplied thermal clothing and helmet, board your snowmobile and set off behind your guide. You’re free to take turns driving and riding during your safari.

Feel the adrenaline rush as you cruise into the darkness around Saariselkä. Follow your guide and the beams of your headlights as you glide through snowy forests and coast across barren fells — it’s an exhilarating experience made extra magical in the dark of evening.

As you ride, watch for the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. Only visible in far northern latitudes, these shimmering lights are caused by electrically charged particles colliding with the Earth’s atmosphere. Sightings are dependent on weather, location and chance, but with luck and in areas free from light pollution, there’s a good chance of seeing a display.

After a while, arrive at an igloo and kota camp nestled on a fellside. Head inside an igloo for a interesting multimedia presentation on the Northern Lights and learn the science behind this natural wonder. Then, with tips from your guide, delve into the nearby woodlands or stay put around the igloos to watch the sky.

As you keep vigil, keep warm by an open fire in the kota. Enjoy delicious sausages cooked on the fire and cups of hot berry juice as you hear tales and legends about the lights from your guide.

Later, hop back onto your snowmobile and zoom back to Saariselkä, where your adventure ends with a hotel drop-off.

Please note: Due to unpredictable weather conditions, daylight hours and other seasonable changes, the order of activities as described above may be subject to change on the day of your tour.
