Wander into mangrove forests and ancient Taíno caves on this day trip to Los Haitises National Park from La Romana. Discover exotic birds and plant life in this protected nature reserve along the Dominican Republic’s eastern coast. Then, relax in Paraiso Caño Hondo, an ecological lodge with natural pools. A buffet lunch with lobster and an open bar, as well as air-conditioned hotel transport, are included. After pickup by air-conditioned coach from your La Romana-area hotel, travel northward with your guide to Los Haitises National Park, which includes the subtropical woods and swamps near Sabana de la Mar along Samaná Bay and the islets dotting San Lorenzo Bay. Enjoy a light breakfast in transit and learn about the park’s unique geology that formed more than 10,000 years ago.

In the indigenous Taíno language, Haitis (the singular form) means highland or mountain range. Most of the area is accessible only by boat, which you’ll board upon arrival at the park.

Your captain weaves through mangrove swamps, navigating through dozens of canals created by the more than 100 rivers crossing one another. Glimpse blue and white herons, and spot carp, crab, oysters, river shrimp and manatees that thrive in the mixture of salty and fresh waters.

Then, visit some of the park’s caverns formed by water erosion — Cueva de la Linea and Cueva de la Arena — that contain petroglyphs and sculptures believed to have been made by the Taínos, the region’s first inhabitants. As you gaze at carvings of hands, herons, whales and rain, hear about Taíno legends and local lore surrounding these caves.

Your tour of the park also includes a rainforest hike. See pelicans and a great array of plant life, including orchids, bromeliads, and maguey (agave) that your guide points out along the way.

Next, hop aboard a catamaran and zip over to Paraiso Caño Hondo for some relaxation. Enjoy this ecological lodge featuring twelve natural swimming pools with waterfalls. Take a dip or relax in your chair overlooking this tropical paradise. Once you have worked up an appetite it will be time to enjoy the lunch buffet!
When it’s time to leave, enjoy transport back to your La Romana-area hotel.
