Meet your friendly local guide upon pickup from your hotel and head deep into Los Haitises National Park, where dozens of rocky island hills called mogotes drip with dense subtropical forest. This protected coastal sanctuary, including aquamarine San Lorenzo Bay, is home to a variety of reptiles, crustaceans, virgin flora and many species of birds.

When you reach Los Haitises, take a ride down the river and see the magnificent mangroves, rich with a variety of species such as red mangrove and white mangrove, and crawling with sea creatures.

As you tour the marine park, your guide will point out Los Haitises islands such as Cayo de los Pájaros (Bird Key), which frigate birds and brown pelicans inhabit. Spot the cupey, a dominant tree species with horizontal branches full of birds, the wild banyan tree (also known as the shortleaf fig) and the tropical almond, among other flora such as delicate orchids.

Continue your ecological adventure with a visit to the caverns, which the area’s first inhabitants (who possibly predated the indigenous Tainos) decorated with pictographs and petroglyphs. Enjoy a refreshing dip under the delightful waterfalls and dine on lunch before completing your eco-tour.
