As a diving spot, the Marietas Islands are considered to be one of the best locations in the region. This is a small-group tour for certified divers with a maximum of 4 people for personal experience. Certification is required.The Marietas Islands are a small group of islands a few miles off the coast of Punta de Mita (Banderas Bay, Nayarit). A protected national park since the late 1960's, thanks to the activity of an international group of scientists led by Jacques Cousteau, the Marietas Islands are home to an abundant marine life population; massive sea turtles, manta rays and dolphins are not difficult to spot any time of the year. They count, as well, tens of thousands of birds among their wildlife, with extremely rare species such as the blue-footed Booby indigenous of the area.
In winter, the bay becomes the backdrop for one of the most spectacular events in nature: the arrival of the humpback whales. The whales arrive for their mating season and spend several months close to the islands, where they give birth to their calves.
The diving spot is approximately 20 minutes away from the shores of Punta de Mita and is easily reached by boat.
The islands feature an amazing series of underwater mountains with several large caves to explore and a different range of dive settings.
As a protected marine park, you will encounter a wide range of tropical fish and with a water temperature ranging from 62-86°F and a depth of 25-75 ft, the islands are a perfect location for scuba divers of all levels.
