Medellín’s food markets have become tourist attractions, and it’s easy to see why — they’re overflowing with exotic fruits and vegetables, fresh meats, and aromatic herbs. Visiting them is a great way to get a sense of the daily life of the average Colombian. This 3-hour guided tour goes to two food markets and a flower market. Stroll the markets and take photos, speak to vendors and learn about what makes a Colombian food or flower market such an incredible place to visit.
After hotel pickup in an air-conditioned vehicle, travel to the Central Mayorista, 40 blocks chock-full of stalls selling exotic fruits, vegetables, herbs and meats. It’s the biggest food market in Medellín, and it’s so big that you could easily get lost. It’s a good thing, then, that this 3-hour tour comes with an expert local guide who leads you through the magnificent market, pointing out interesting things along the way and foodstuffs that don’t exist back home. Your guide is there to help you speak with the vendors, sample some food, and learn about the history of the market.

The next stop is the cozier Minorista market, a smaller venue where you can get a sense of how working-class Colombians shop for their food. Northwest of El Centro, Plaza Minorista was established in 1984 and boasts over 2,500 stalls. Once again, try samples and ask questions about local herbs and organic produce as the guide takes you around.

The third and final stop on the tour is the Flower Plaza or Placita de Flores, a lovely marketplace packed with colorful and aromatic flowers and herbs. Take some time to look at the beautiful flowers and learn about various plants’ healing properties. After you’ve seen the market, get back in the tour vehicle for drop-off at your hotel or another destination in Medellín.
