Music and culture enthusiasts are limited to eight people on this tour, allowing for more personal attention from your guide.
This tour starts around 7:30pm and will pass by the main hotspots in Lisbon, specially related to Fado and of cultural interest. We'll head towards Lisbon's Downtown (Baixa), through the districts of Chiado and Bairro Alto.
Bairro Alto is one of the birthplaces of Fado, since it was mostly inhabited by sailors, fishermen and sea merchants, who traditionally are the first ones to sing this beautiful and melancholic music style. As they were away from home, they sang about the “Saudade” (untranslatable feeling of home sickness and/or missing someone very deeply). Currently Fado is considered Intangible World Heritage by UNESCO.
After passing by these historic districts of Lisbon, we continue towards the Graça district, to make a brief stop at one of the best viewpoints of Lisbon. From this picturesque neighborhood, we go to Alfama, the oldest district of Lisbon with its narrow streets, a legacy left by the Moors. Alleys, stairways and dead ends were part of the highly strategic defensive system and currently they create a feeling of time travel, as it also became the most traditional district of Lisbon. Always connected to the roots of the city, a truly popular neighborhood, also inhabited by people linked to the sea and with its big Moorish influence, Alfama became the incubator of Fado.
We’ll find here the Moorish root of this music style since one of the main characteristics is precisely the strong projection of voice by the singer (woman or man). We’ll spend some time feeling the atmosphere of Alfama, as we head towards the restaurant where the dinner and the Fado Show will be held. The dinner includes soup, couvert, main dish of fish or meat, desert, drinks, coffee or tea. You’ll enjoy the show while you have a wonderful meal in a traditional and most reputable Fado House.
As the lights dim, set your fork down and listen to a beautiful 3-hour live Fado performance. When a Fado singer starts to perform it is forbidden to speak or make noise. Let your emotions roll with the music until the melancholic noted come to end. As the clock strikes midnight, hop back in your vehicle and return to your hotel where you tour ends.
