Its palaces reflect the eclectic taste of a sophisticated society and you can still imagine the charm of parasols and top-hats parading along the town’s streets.After a pick up from your centrally-located Lisbon accommodations, you will begin your tour by visiting Pena National Palace. This national monument constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th-century Romanticism in the world. Its history began in the Middle Ages as a chapel built to honor Our Lady of Pena after a sighting of the Virgin Mary, then was expanded to include a monastery in 1493. After an earthquake and lightning strikes, languished in disrepair and ruin for centuries before Prince Ferdinand decided that the buildings and the surrounding area should be transformed into a palace that would serve as a summer residence for the Portuguese royal family.
Completely surrounding the palace is Pena Park. Continuing the Romanticism of the palace, trees and plants from all over the world were planted in the gardens. Sequoia and magnolia from the United States, trees from China and Japan and ferns from Australia and New Zealand.
