The archaeological site of Knossos is located 3 miles southeast of the city of Heraklion. It is considered Europe's oldest city, dating back to the Neolithic times (6000 B.C.). On the ruins of the Neolithic settlement was built the first Minoan palace (1900 B.C.) under the dynasty of Minos. After its destruction in 1700 B.C, a new palace was built in its place. After this period, the Minoan civilization was at its peak and Knossos was the most important city-state.

The site was discovered in 1878 by Minos Kalokairinos. The excavations in Knossos began in 1900 by the English archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans and his team, and they carried on for 35 years.

After a fascinating tour through the Minoan Palace of Knossos, which will leave you breathless as you wonder over the technology and the facilities of that period, you will board the coach onto Heraklion, the capital town and business center of Crete, which is a colorful and lively place.

You will then have the chance to enjoy a sightseeing tour along Heraklion’s city walls, with the highlights being the Venetian harbor, the Byzantine Saint Titus church and the Lions Square with the former Morosini fountain. In Heraklion you have the option to either enjoy a guided tour through the extraordinary archaeological museum of Heraklion, viewing exhibits from the Minoan culture, or spend free time in the city center to stroll around the shops.
