It is regarded as one of Europe's greatest medieval squares thanks to its unusual shape that reminds of a shell or the mantel of the Vergin Mary that protects all of us. It is renowned worldwide for its beauty and architectural integrity. The Palazzo Pubblico and its Torre del Mangia, as well as various palazzi signorili surround the shell-shaped piazza.
At the northwest edge is the Fonte Gaia, a good example of renaissance fountain by Jacopo della Quercia, with many bas-reliefs as the Madonna surrounded by the Classical and the Christian Virtues, emblematic of Good Government under the patronage of the Madonna. Once left the political center you will visit the rival religious one with its wonderful Duomo. It's very easy to be recognized thanks to white and greenish-black marble stripes. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, linked to black and white horses of the legendary city's founders, Senius and Aschius. It's one of the best example of Gothic Cathedral in Italy, it's full of decorations and details of different ages.
