Celebrate the festive season in Salzburg with a 4-hour Christmas Eve guided tour to Arnsdorf and the Silent Night Chapel in Oberndorf. Few songs evoke the spirit of Christmas as much as the popular hymn ‘Silent Night, Holy Night’ and this famous carol is the focal point of this tour. Accompanied by a guide, see the school where composer Franz Xaver Gruber taught, the Silent Night Chapel and museum in Oberndorf where the hymn was first performed.Make your own way to the central Mirabell Square (Mirabellplatz) in the early afternoon to begin your tour. Your ticket gives you free access to city buses for the entire day and can be used to travel here. Arrive early and browse the bustling festive market on the square, before beginning this Christmas Eve tour.
Once you’ve boarded your comfortable coach, drive out of Salzburg into the magical winter wonderland that surround it. Listen to the fascinating onboard commentary and admire the scenic vistas as you pass through the foothills of the Austrian Alps, which are typically covered in white snow at this time of the year.
Pause at the village Arnsdorf to visit the school building where Silent Night composer Franz Xaver Gruber taught. This school is the oldest school building in Austria that is still in use.
Next, continue on to Oberndorf, a charming village on the Salzach River. It was here that Gruber’s beloved carol was first performed back in 1818. Hop off to take a look at the 19th-century Silent Night Chapel and listen as your guide tells you more about the chapel’s background and its associations with ‘Silent Night, Holy Night’. Stop into the Silent Night museum to discover more about the origins of the beautiful song.
Once you’re back on the bus, embrace the festive spirit as you listen to Christmas music during the journey back to Mirabell Square. The tour ends here, but you can continue to soak up the magical atmosphere in the festive Salzburg Old Town, which will be decked out with advent decorations.
