After a visit to Comalapa, we will be moving to the archaeological site of Iximche, one of the oldest and most important cities of the Maya. You will be picked up at your hotel in Guatemala City or Antigua Guatemala, and transferred to San Juan Comalapa, one of the most picturesque village of Guatemala. Upon arrival you will be able to observe several local art galleries, where artists show their work.

San Juan Comalapa is sometimes called the "Florence of America" because of the many Kaqchikel painters living there. The town really gained its reputation by the work of Andrés Curuchich who rose to fame for his paintings depicting local village life. His work has been displayed in galleries as far away as New York.

Upon arrival in the town, drive past the colorful cemetery which has a mural painted by local artists running along its outer wall. The mural depicts major events in the history of Guatemala, including the Maya creation story, the Spanish conquest and more recently Guatemala's civil war. This was painted by a collaboration of local artists.

Local artists display their work in household galleries and open their doors for visitors to see their varied and colorful artwork. Visit some galleries and explore the colorful market in the streets of the town and their baroque church. After the visit to Comalapa, we will be moving to archaeological site of Iximche, a city of the post classical period. Visit the pyramids in honor of moon and sun, which is one of the oldest and most important cities of the Maya.

Iximche is a Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican archaeological site in the western highlands of Guatemala. Iximche was the capital of the Late Postclassic Kaqchikel Maya kingdom from 1470 until its abandonment in 1524. The architecture of the site included a number of pyramid-temples, palaces and two Mesoamerican ball-courts.

There will be some free time for lunch and at the end of the tour before going back to to Antigua or Guatemala City.
