Our first encounter with the Sasak culture is the pottery village of Banyumulek Village. This village is one of the main pottery centers of Lombok, specializing in decorated pots and pots with fiber covering, as well as more traditional urns and flasks. When time permits, you can enjoy a short ride on one of the most traditional forms of transport found anywhere in the world, a horse and cart which, in the Sasak language is called ‘Cidomo’.

Weaving is found in Sukarare, south of Cakranegara. This is a village of traditional weavers and has been a part of Lombok’s Sasak culture for generations. The weaving style here has its own distinctive known for its brightly patterned ‘Songket’ cloth (a Songket is a luxury product traditionally worn during ceremonial occasions). The techniques, patterns and motifs have been handed down from generation to generation.

Standing out from the crowd is the village of Sade: Sade is a traditional ‘Sasak’ village and is made up of a series of houses made from buffalo dung and mud. The local ladies in the village weave lovely cloth that can be used as scarves or home decoration. The people of Sade have their own traditions which may vary from other areas of the island.
