In this tour you will explore Saint Felipe’s Fort and find out about the biggest military embarrassment of the British Empire.
You will visit La Popa Monastery located on a hill, 150 meters above Cartagena. A wooden statue of La Virgen de la Candelaria, the patroness of the city, is in the convent’s chapel. Visit also the traditional Spanish flower-filled patio. The views from here are outstanding.
Then proceed to the Vaults, in the historic center, known as Las Bovedas, which were old barracks and storage of arms and ammunition. These are now converted into a cultural center of local art, Caribbean traditions, local candies, gold and precious stones.
This tour also includes a visit to the Zenu Gold Museum housed in a charming colonial house on the Plaza Bolivar (closed on Mondays). You will see pre-Colombian gold jewelry created by the indigenous people who lived in the area of Cartagena for over two thousand years. Although the Spaniards confiscated much of the local gold in the 16th century, there are wonderful examples of the Zenu’s fine gold artwork that eluded the Spaniards.
