Arrive at Rila Monastery around 11:30am for free time on the site.
After reaching Rila Moanstery, take an optional shuttle at no additional cost to go a few kilometers further up the mountain to start of short hike to the cave of St. Ivan Rilski (St. John of Rila), the founder of the monastery. A 15-20 min pilgrimage forest path will take you to the cave where Bulgaria's most praised Saint has lived. Comfortable walking shoes and good hiking skills are required. After visiting the cave, the shuttle will take you down to the Rila Monastery for your self-guided tour.
Leave Rila Monastery at 3:30 pm and arrive back in Sofia city around 5:30pm at the original departure location.
