Are you ready to enjoy the world-famous Palio Horse Race of Siena? First, you will enjoy a guided tour of Siena then you will watch the race and, at the end of the horse race, you will have a dinner at a restaurant in Piazza del Campo. The Palio of Siena is a world-famous horse race that bears all the drama and the tradition of Siena’s medieval roots and history. The event lasts four days, in which the whole of town is celebrating its own contrada (literally “neighborhood”, each horse and jockey in the race represents one) and living the excitement. The climax of the Palio will naturally be on the last day, when the horse race takes place.
On this day, the 2nd of July or the 16th of August, you will comfortably reach Siena on board of air conditioned GT coaches or minivans. Meet with your tour leader and start off on a guided tour of this beautiful city, soak up all the atmosphere of the Palio and witness the peculiar and intense antagonism that generates among competing contrade, some of which dates back to ancient times. You will also witness the astounding blessing of the horses, something you will surely never forget!
In the afternoon you will be escorted to the main square, Piazza del Campo, so you can find a spot and prepare for the Palio’s climax: the race. After a magnificent parade in Renaissance costumes, three frenzied laps of the Piazza will decide the winner. The citizens of the winning Contrada then acclaim the horse and the jockey as heroes and will proudly celebrate all year long. You’ll see the pure madness and joy of the people, and it will be impossible for you not to get carried away and feel a bit “Senese” yourself. Once the celebrations in the square have cooled down and the evening starts to unfold, you will reach a restaurant right in Piazza del Campo where you will enjoy a delicious 3-course a la carte dinner.
