While you’re in port in Skagway, learn the ancient art of blowing glass at Jewell Gardens! After watching a demonstration by an experienced glassblower, you can blow your own glass ornament to take home — a memorable souvenir of your Alaskan cruise. You’ll also have time to tour the organic flower garden and explore the glass gallery, where spectacular pieces of hand-blown glass are on display. The lesson is limited to six people, ensuring you enjoy a small-group experience. When your cruise ship docks in Skagway, disembark and make your own way to Jewell Gardens, located just outside the northeastern edge of downtown. It’s an approximate 2-mile (3-km) walk or bike ride from the port, or you can take the Skagway city transit.

Upon arrival, let the creative atmosphere of Jewell Gardens’ mix of natural and manmade beauty get you in the spirit. Perhaps the colorful show garden will provide a little inspiration for your glassblowing! Meet your glassblower — aka ‘gaffer’ — who will introduce you to the ‘hot shop’ where the glassblowing takes place.

While observing your gaffer’s demonstration, learn about the long history of turning molten glass into vases, ornaments, dishes, jewelry and more. Then, under your gaffer’s watchful eye, blow your own glass ornament, a delicate memento to remind you of your Alaskan cruise.

There’s no need to worry about packing it and getting it home in one piece — Jewell Gardens will ship your ornament anywhere in the world, on the house.

Before you leave, take a guided tour of the glass gallery to see more pieces of hand-blown glass, and then end your experience with a stroll around the organic flower and vegetable gardens. Or, check out the garden railway, where a model train from the White Pass & Yukon Route winds through a miniature version of Skagway and then travels through mountains and forests. Beer and wine are available for purchase at your own expense.

This excursion is located approximately 2 miles (3 km) from the cruise port, so you determine the time you return to your ship in Skagway. Please allow yourself ample time to enjoy the excursion and ensure your timely return to the port. This excursion is not covered by our worry-free policy.
