Starting at Palace Square in St Petersburg, meet your knowledgeable local guide and small group, and set out on your walking tour of the imperial city. Glimpse the grand Winter Palace before heading across the Neva River to the Spit of St Basil Island, renowned for its outstanding views.

From this vista, your guide will point out notable landmarks along the Palace Embankment such as the Hermitage Museum, the Admiralty, St Isaac’s Cathedral and the Chamber of Curiosities.

Next, visit Peter and Paul Fortress, and listen to commentary from your guide about St Petersburg’s oldest structure, built in 1703. If you choose, you can visit the famous cathedral, the burial vault of Peter the Great and the Romanov family (own expense).

Then, walk to the Church on Spilled Blood, the assassination site of tsar Alexander II. Admire the church’s onion domes and ornate façade before continuing along St Petersburg’s busiest street, Nevsky Prospect.

As you pass restaurants, theaters museums and palaces along the way, learn more from your guide about the rich history of St Petersburg as well as its present-day life. Stop at a local eatery for a bite to eat (own expense) and try a traditional dish like blinis (pancakes), borsch (beet soup) or beef stroganoff.

Finally, follow your guide toward St Isaac’s Square to see St Isaac’s Cathedral, where your tour ends. If you’d like, you can go inside on your own to admire the opulent sculptures, oil paintings and reliefs, or climb the spiral staircase to the dome for spectacular views of St Petersburg!
