During your time in port in Stockholm, seize the opportunity to uncover Sweden’s fascinating Viking and medieval history with this engrossing full-day shore excursion! Head into the idyllic countryside north of the capital to see decoratively engraved runic stones, discover the aeons-old sacrificial and burial sites at Gamla Uppsala (Old Uppsala), and visit Sigtuna, the country’s oldest town. Hear intriguing tales and nuggets about Viking culture and mythology from your guide as you go, and finish with free time to explore the elegant streets of historical Uppsala, once Sweden’s capital.
After a pickup from Stockholm's port, sit back in your minibus and soak up the views over Sweden’s unspoiled countryside as you head north from the city. As you travel, your guide will shed light on the history of the Vikings in the country and explain more about the sights that await you.

Your first stop is Täby to see Jarlabankes bro, an ancient Viking causeway. Check out the intricately carved runic stones here, before heading to Arkils tingstad. Here, inspect the stones once used as seats in a Viking parliament as your guide describes how meeting places like these were used to settle disputes and finalize laws.

Next up is Granby, an important village dating from around 400 or 500 AD. Admire the Granbyhällen, a massive rock decorated with swirling rune engravings. Contemplate what you’ve seen on a break for coffee or a light lunch (own expense) at the nearby Hökeriet cafe and vintage store. Perhaps buy some souvenirs here in the shape of Swedish handicrafts and homemade preserves.

Afterward, continue through the scenic Lunda region to Sweden’s oldest town, Sigtuna, founded in the 10th century. Enjoy free time to amble around the quaint streets and wonder at its Viking runic stones.

Then, travel to the small village of Gamla Uppsala. It is home to royal burial mounds, and considered one of Sweden’s most important sacred sites. Lastly, head for new Uppsala, where you have time to explore on your own. You might go to see Uppsala Cathedral (Uppsala Domkyrka), Sweden’s oldest church, or delve into the charming Uppsala Old Town and shopping streets.

Your tour ends with a drop-off back at the port in the late afternoon.
